Key features

Why choose Toughboy measuring buoys

Select the measurement configuration and ADCP option for the site, then plan mooring, data access and service.

Yellow measuring buoy riding low in calm Nordic coastal water under a bright sky, hull waterline at its widest point.

Nordic marine deployment

Toughboy is built for marine deployment in Nordic conditions. Specify the site exposure and planned service access with the configuration.

Measurement configuration

Wave, water level and temperature measurements are listed in the range. An ADCP adds current profiling; confirm the sensor package supplied.

ADCP current profiling

ADCP variants cover different profiling requirements. Select the supplied instrument and configuration from the depth and measurement task.

Wave measurement

Wave data from the buoy itself, useful for harbor operations, coastal works and offshore planning around your site.

Water level and temperature

Water level and temperature are recorded alongside waves and current, giving one buoy for the sea conditions around a harbor.

Plan operating cost

Construction, sensor configuration and service intervals determine operating cost over the deployment period.

Data online and shared

With all information online, you can easily share the data with those who need it, from harbor staff to consultants and authorities.

With or without ADCP

Choose a buoy without ADCP when current profiling is not needed, or specify the ADCP configuration for the required measurements.

How it works

How a Toughboy measuring buoy collects and shares data

Moor the buoy at the measurement location and configure data collection and online access for the project.

A close low-angle view shows the Toughboy measuring buoy solar panels, sensor mast and navigation light.

Toughboy measuring buoys are deployed at harbor entrances, coastal monitoring locations and construction sites. The installed sensors record the required conditions, with an ADCP added where current profiling is needed.

Vikingegaarden helps select the variant, confirm its instrument specifications, plan the mooring and set up access to the measurements online.

  • Decide whether the project requires ADCP current profiling

  • Moor the buoy at the site of interest

  • Configure the installed sensors and measurement schedule

  • All information goes online and is shared with those who need it

  • Plan inspection and service for the deployment

Product guide

Planning wave and current measurements

A Toughboy buoy provides measurements from the location where the project needs them. The sensor configuration, mooring and data access should be specified together.

Harbor and coastal project requirements

Harbor operations, coastal engineering and offshore construction can require local wave and current information. Define the measurement location and parameters, then identify who needs access to the readings. Vikingegaarden sets up online access for the project.

With or without current profiling

The range includes a Toughboy without ADCP and variants fitted with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler. Choose the ADCP configuration from the required profiling depth and measurement task, and confirm the instrument specifications and included sensors before ordering.

A buoy without ADCP does not provide ADCP current profiling. Wave, water level and temperature measurements are listed for the range; the supplied sensor package should be confirmed for the selected configuration.

Mooring, collection and service

Place the buoy at the harbor entrance, construction site or coastal location being studied. Vikingegaarden helps plan the mooring, measurement configuration and online access. Inspection and service requirements should be considered for the planned deployment and exposure.

When a configurable data buoy is more appropriate

For a broader selection of sensors, logging and communications, compare marine data buoys. For visible navigation marking without a measurement system, see navigation buoys.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions about measuring buoys

What does a Toughboy measuring buoy record?

The listed range covers wave, water level and temperature measurements, with optional ADCP current profiling. Confirm the sensor package and measurement configuration for the supplied buoy.

Do I need an ADCP?

An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler is used when the project requires a current profile through the water column. A variant without ADCP is available when this measurement is not required.

How is the ADCP configuration selected?

Provide the profiling depth and measurement task. Vikingegaarden helps select the instrument and confirms its model, frequency units and profiling range against the configuration supplied.

Where can the buoy be deployed?

Typical locations include harbor entrances, coastal monitoring sites and coastal or offshore construction projects. The mooring and service plan are specified for the location and conditions.

How can the project team access measurements?

Measurements are available online and can be shared with the harbor team, engineers, consultants and other project users. Vikingegaarden sets up data access with the deployment.

How does this differ from a general data buoy?

Toughboy provides a wave measurement range with current profiling options. A data buoy is a configurable platform for sensors, logging and wireless communication.
