Leading lights for harbour approaches and navigation channels

Leading lights, also called range lights, define a leading line using a front and rear light at specified positions and elevations. Vikingegaarden supplies MSM MRL-M and MRL-D and Tideland Signal RLED-MasterRange and RLED-355, with installation, commissioning and support from Denmark.

Key features

Application and selection criteria

A leading line is observed when the rear light appears vertically above the front light. Lateral displacement changes their apparent horizontal separation, providing a visual indication of position relative to the line.

A directional range light points along the harbour entrance from its adjustable pier-head mount at dusk.

Installation geometry

The front and rear positions, elevations and separation are calculated from the approach length, channel width and observer heights. Beam divergence and alignment must provide the required coverage throughout the specified operating area.

Power and autonomy

MSM publishes maximum power consumption of 60 W for MRL-M and 10 W for MRL-D. The supply for each position is sized for the configured intensity, flash character and required autonomy; Tideland power data is confirmed for the selected configuration.

Equipment documentation

The supplied configuration is identified in the project documentation. Published figures and any applicable certificates are checked against the specified operating conditions.

Monitoring interfaces

Emiko monitoring is specified where supported by the equipment. Available signals, communications and alarm handling are confirmed before supply.

Commissioning record

Commissioning records the installed equipment, settings and functional checks. The handover documentation defines the inspection and maintenance requirements.

Site conditions

Selection accounts for the mounting arrangement, exposure and access for servicing. Site data forms part of the agreed specification.

Project information

The quotation requires the site layout and operating requirements. Vikingegaarden confirms equipment, installation and service scope from this information.

Installation requirements

The front and rear positions, elevations and separation are calculated from the approach length, channel width and observer heights. Beam divergence and alignment must provide the required coverage throughout the specified operating area.

Electrical specification

MSM publishes maximum power consumption of 60 W for MRL-M and 10 W for MRL-D. The supply for each position is sized for the configured intensity, flash character and required autonomy; Tideland power data is confirmed for the selected configuration.

Technical questions

Specification questions

What determines the installation configuration?

The front and rear positions, elevations and separation are calculated from the approach length, channel width and observer heights. Beam divergence and alignment must provide the required coverage throughout the specified operating area.

How is the power budget specified?

MSM publishes maximum power consumption of 60 W for MRL-M and 10 W for MRL-D. The supply for each position is sized for the configured intensity, flash character and required autonomy; Tideland power data is confirmed for the selected configuration.

Which approval documents are supplied?

Documentation is confirmed for the selected equipment and application. Vikingegaarden identifies the available manufacturer documents and the requirements stated by the responsible authority.

What is required for a quotation?

The enquiry should include the marking plan, site coordinates, required performance, available power and mounting details. Monitoring, access and maintenance requirements should also be stated.

Which colours and flash characters can be specified?

The marking plan defines the colour and flash character for each light. Available optics, controller settings and synchronisation are confirmed for the selected models.
