Innovative Turnkey Solution for Gjögur Lighthouse Sector Light

Innovative Turnkey Solution for Gjögur Lighthouse Sector Light

Gjögur Lighthouse, a vital navigation aid in Iceland’s Westfjords, has long served maritime vessels navigating the challenging waters of the region. However, after years of neglect and severe damage caused by a winter storm in December 2023, the original structure was destroyed. To restore its functionality, the Iceland Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA) has partnered with Vikingegaarden to deliver a modern, reliable, and energy-efficient solution.

The result is a fully equipped 24m meshed metal mast fitted with advanced sector lighting and radar technology. This turnkey solution ensures long-term performance under Iceland’s extreme environmental conditions.

Advanced Sector Lighting: ODSL HI

At the core of this project is the ODSL HI, a high-intensity, modular LED sector beacon designed for long-range visibility. This beacon provides precise and efficient navigation guidance with a range of up to 14 nautical miles (NM).

Key Features:

  • Modular design with built-in redundancy for uninterrupted performance.
  • Maintenance-free LED technology with low energy consumption.
  • Automatic day-night transition for optimized power usage.
  • Weather-resistant construction (IP66 and IP67 ratings).

The ODSL HI ensures reliable navigation support even in the harshest maritime environments, making it an ideal choice for Gjögur Lighthouse.

Enhanced Navigation with HEKLEO 2 XS Radar Beacon

To further enhance safety, the solution includes the HEKLEO 2 XS Radar Beacon, a frequency-agile beacon operating on X and S bands. This beacon provides clear identification of the lighthouse location to nearby vessels via programmable Morse code responses displayed on radar screens.

Highlights:

  • Low-power operation with energy-saving modes.
  • Compliance with IMO/IALA standards for maritime safety.
  • Side-lobe suppression for accurate radar signal discrimination.
  • Durable construction for operation in all weather conditions.

This beacon represents the latest in radar navigation technology, ensuring dependable performance for years to come.

Infrastructure: 24m Modular Meshed Mast

The newly installed 24m metal mast is a critical component of the project. Constructed from galvanized steel, it is designed to withstand environmental stress while maintaining a lightweight, modular structure for easy transportation and assembly.

Specifications:

  • Painted in IALA Red and White colors for visibility.
  • Built-in ladders in each 6m section for maintenance access.
  • Optional cable ducts for efficient power and signal management.

The mast provides a sturdy and reliable platform for the ODSL HI and HEKLEO 2 XS systems, ensuring their optimal functionality.

Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)

The power system includes a robust UPS solution with remote alarm monitoring, ensuring uninterrupted operation of all equipment for a minimum of 96 hours. This solution also accommodates the radar beacon, providing seamless performance for up to 6–7 days during outages.

Key Components:

  • Battery bank: 360 Ah capacity with solar backup.
  • Outdoor cabinet: Weatherproof and durable for all-season use.
  • Plug-and-play design: Simplifies installation and minimizes downtime.

This efficient power setup guarantees that the lighthouse remains operational under any circumstances.

Vikingegaarden’s turnkey solution for Gjögur Lighthouse not only restores its vital role in maritime navigation but also sets a new standard for sustainability, efficiency, and reliability. This project exemplifies modern maritime innovation, ensuring safety and operational excellence in Iceland’s demanding conditions.
