Gjögur Lighthouse rebuilt with sector light and radar beacon

Vikingegaarden worked with the Iceland Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA) to restore Gjögur Lighthouse in Iceland's Westfjords after the original structure was destroyed in a winter storm in December 2023. The replacement project combines a 24 m metal mast, sector lighting, radar identification and monitored backup power.
ODSL HI sector light
The project uses an ODSL HI modular LED sector beacon with a reported range of up to 14 nautical miles. Its listed features include built-in redundancy, LED lighting with low power consumption, automatic day-night transition and weather-resistant construction with IP66 and IP67 ratings.
The sector light provides visual guidance for vessels approaching the area. The ODSL HI name and specifications describe the equipment in this dated project report.
HEKLEO 2 XS radar identification
A HEKLEO 2 XS radar beacon adds identification on ship radar. The frequency-agile racon operates on X and S bands and responds with a programmed Morse identifier.
The project description lists power-saving modes, side-lobe suppression and IMO and IALA compliance among the beacon's features. Radar identification adds a second way to locate the lighthouse in poor visibility.
24 m modular mast
The newly installed mast is constructed from galvanised steel with a modular meshed structure for transport and assembly. It is painted in IALA red and white colours, with built-in ladders in each 6 m section for maintenance access. Optional cable ducts provide a route for power and signal cables.
Backup power for the defined equipment load
The project power design includes a monitored UPS with a documented minimum backup period of 96 hours for the defined equipment load. Autonomy for each connected device, including the radar beacon, depends on its load and the final battery configuration.
The listed power equipment includes a 360 Ah battery bank with solar backup and an outdoor cabinet. The setup was designed to cover the documented backup period under the agreed operating conditions.
Planning a new navigation-light installation
